Helping Toddlers Solve Bad Breath Problems
Posted by Darren Wumoult
It seems strange to think of the fact that toddlers would ever have problems with bad breath but a lot of parents have started noticing that their children are having a problem way before they are ready to start brushing their teeth and before they are able to use mouthwash.
If this is the problem what exactly can parents do when they start to notice that their toddlers have bad breath? Surely there should be products which are safe enough to be used by these toddlers? These products exist but before we delve into their use, it is important to understand the causes of foul breath and what we should look out for.
The safety of your child is paramount when thinking about the problem of bad breath. Children shouldn’t have to use products meant for adults such as mouthwashes and rinses because these products may be dangerous to them.
Many of these products contain alcohol or peroxide, both of which can be damaging to a baby’s developing system. There are more effective and much safer ways to address smelly breath in young children. When in doubt, you should always consult your family doctor or dentist.
Most bad breath situations are caused by the things which children eat and the decomposing food particles which still remain in their mouths and which they are unable to get rid of through flossing and brushing. Toddlers still on a bottle may have such problems due to the formula they are drinking which dries inside their mouths and giving room for bacteria to thrive.
Some foods that cause bad breath in adults, such as broccoli, cauliflower, and other vegetables can also cause bad breath in young children. These foods release enzymes and other chemicals that become a bad smell when in the air.
To combat the problem of bad breath in toddlers, make sure he or she is adequately hydrated so they can rinse these food particles and dried formula out with their own saliva, which is a natural remedy for halitosis. Having a bottle or cup of water handy is a good idea so that the baby can have some water when they want it.
Certain cases of smelly breath may be caused when a baby breathes through their mouth instead of their nose. This will then result in the mouth drying up which then causes halitosis. Other conditions which you should check out for are blockages of the sinus cavity or sinusitis, post nasal drip, or any other condition that would cause improper breathing. A pediatrician can also perform a thorough exam and instruct you on how to handle this problem.
Parents shouldn’t lose hope when their children have bad breath, what they need to do is to ascertain the cause of these bad breath problems and then use the appropriate solutions to eliminate the problems. That is the safe and right way to go.
